Animal welfare issues have been the basis of many objections to the proposal.
However, as long as state government guidelines are followed in the application, then these issues are outside of Council’s control, and, as such would not be taken into account for their approval purposes.
When Michael Specter, a writer for The New Yorker, visited a broiler chicken shed near the end of its growing cycle in the US, he wrote:
“I was almost knocked to the ground by the overpowering smell of feces and ammonia. My eyes burned and so did my lungs, and I could neither see nor breathe …. There must have been 30,000 chickens sitting silently on the floor in front of me. They didn’t move, didn’t cluck. They were almost like statues of chickens, living in nearly total darkness, and they would spend every minute of their six-week lives that way.” Food Safety News
Here is a VIDEO on European broiler operations made by Compassion in World Farming.
The Resources page of this site lists links to other animal welfare sites.
Note that the farm’s grain silos and sheds must be baited for mice and rats, and this will adversely affect the district’s native birds and other wildlife.
The cruelty can be understood if you visit the Animals Australia website. It SHOULD be enough to stop this application from being approved.
